DAILYSKIN

DAILYSKIN is a mobile app that offers a personalised skincare routine by having users complete a skincare quiz, which an AI then analyses to create tailored skin care routine recommendations.

Project Type: Academic, Individual, Mobile App Design

Role: Lead Designer, UX UI Designer, UX Researcher

Tools: Figma, Figjam, Goodnotes

Duration: 24 weeks

Project Overview

Background

DAILYSKIN is a skincare app developed for my BrainStation UX Design Capstone project, inspired by my passion for skincare and frequent skincare advice requests from friends.

The project involved identifying a problem, creating a mobile app solution, designing a marketing website, conducting user experience research, and a challenge of designing the application for another device platform.

Secondary Research

Young adults ages, 18 to 41, are facing challenges in establishing an effective and personalized skincare routine, with a lack of knowledge on skincare practices. (2023, HelpLama). This demographic tends to prioritize their health and skincare as a result of these changes.

The Challenge

How might we design an effective and efficient skincare solution tailored for busy professionals, so that it becomes simple and less overwhelming.

Kiosk

A seamless shopping experience designed for speed and convenience. Collaborating with leading cosmetic and department stores, the kiosk allows users to quickly purchase products recommended in their personalized routines. Simply log in by scanning your profile with a QR code, add items to your cart, pay directly at the kiosk, and pick up your skincare essentials in-store.

As a multi-platform challenge, I adapted the application for kiosk use, showcasing its versatility across multiple platforms.

User Interviews

We focused on individuals aged 18 to 41 for this project. We conducted one-on-one interviews with three participants: one highly experienced with skincare, one indifferent to skincare, and one beginner influenced by someone else.

Key Insights

Skincare consumers are overwhelmed and confused by the vast number of products from various brands and key ingredients.

While a consistent skincare routine can be beneficial, consumers struggle to maintain it.

Recommendations from skincare sales associates or dermatologists often fall short due to a lack of sufficient education provided to consumers about skincare.

The Designs

Brand Identity

From the very beginning, even before developing our product, ‘DAILYSKIN’ emerged as a natural fit for our brand, and as I’ve deepened my understanding of what we (as the brand) stand for, I’ve embraced it wholeheartedly, seeing our app as not just a skincare generator, but as a trusted daily companion that effortlessly blends personalized skincare guidance into users’ daily routines for optimal skin health.

Daily - noun, day-to-day, Skin - Noun, a person's complexion
DAILYSKIN - Your daily guide to healthy skin.

For the logo designs, I explored multiple concepts, sketching ideas that incorporated unique fonts and spontaneous inspiration. This creative process led to the development of the final, standout design.

User Persona

Based on research and key insights from interviews, I’ve developed a persona of a city resident, predominantly female aged 18 to 41, who is keen yet overwhelmed with skincare choices and seeks a personalized routine and knowledge enrichment.

Before developing the task flow and sketches, I crafted 20 user stories based on Lilly's challenges and organized them into broader epics. The standout epic, "Effective Skin Care Solutions," addressed key concerns such as discovering gentle skincare products that won't worsen skin issues, effectively targeting specific problems, and creating a routine that aligns with her daily life while addressing her needs.

User Flow

My exploration emphasized how Lilly could discover personalized skincare options through a simple quiz, enabling AI to assess her inputs and provide science-backed, individualized recommendations derived from internal and external research. This process laid the foundation for our first iteration.

User Flow

Sketches and Wireframe

Expanding on the user flow, I created initial sketches to bring the process to life. These sketches formed the foundation of our first iteration, which was refined into the final wireframe following user testing.

User Testings & Iterations

For our user testing, I divided the participants into two groups: five users tested the original prototype, while another five assessed the revised wireframe, making a total of ten testers (friends and family). We conducted a Usability Testing process by assigning the same task to all participants.

Feedback from the first prototype and how we revised it:

  • The question “How to identify my skin type?” felt overwhelming or cluttered. Users suggested presenting this information as a popup for easier readability. We implemented this change to make the experience less overwhelming.

  • The Recommendations section on the Results Screen was highly appreciated by most users.

  • All participants expressed that they liked the app and would consider using it.

  • A few users mentioned that the app’s flow felt intuitive and “right.”

Next Steps

The upcoming steps involve conducting user testing, followed by engaging our marketing team to secure a partnership with a skincare retail store interested in collaborating with DAILYSKIN. Once the partnership is established, we'll proceed with development and further user testing.

DAILYSKIN encourages user engagement by offering reminders for skincare routines and adapting recommendations as needs evolve, while also making it easy to disconnect by helping users establish consistent routines that remain effective over time. The app respects boundaries by allowing users to interact with it on their own terms, ensuring it does not interfere with other aspects of their lives. However, it might be inappropriate or distracting to use DAILYSKIN in settings that demand full attention, such as during meetings, driving, or social interactions, where it could be disruptive or disrespectful.

Key Learnings

My first UX Project experience

Transitioning from an IT background to UX research has been both challenging and rewarding, sparking a deep passion for design that blends creativity with problem-solving. The approach differs from UX Research; IT emphasizes efficient solutions, while UX requires a deeper journey from understanding to final product development.

My biggest challenge was crafting more impactful interview questions, as my initial ones were either too vague or led to straightforward answers. Through this process, I realized the importance of asking the right questions.

My growing passion and pain with using Figma prototype

Throughout the class, I gained a solid foundation in Figma basics. However, I took the initiative to self-teach advanced prototyping with variables—a skill that was greatly enhanced by my background in coding. Despite my love-hate relationship with coding, incorporating it into advanced prototyping turned out to be an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Kudos

A big thank you to BrainStation, the instructors, teaching assistants, and my classmates for their collective dedication and hard work throughout the program! I’m also deeply grateful to my friends and family for supporting me and contributing to interviews and user testing.
